August Sketch Challenge and Sample layout by Nancy

Welcome to the August Sketch Challenge!

Each month, on the first Monday, a new sketch will be provided.  Use the sketch to create a layout, card or other craft project.  Winner will be drawn from all eligible entries and will receive a $10 gift certificate to Gina's Designs online store.  We encourage you to use Gina's Designs products in your project but it is not required to be eligible to win.  You have until the first Monday of the Following month to enter and the winner will be announced on the blog on the second Monday of the following month.  Use the Link Up tool below to enter.
Here is the sketch for August.

Below is my take on the sketch.  I received this gorgeous paper kit from Kitty's Scrap Post as part of our month-long August promotional.  When I saw all the red, black and white,  I couldn't help but think of how much I missed scrapping Twilight.  The kit contains background papers as well as element sheets that can be cut up and added to your project.  This kit has a lot of vintage Paris elements, and Valentine or love themed elements but with a Gothic flair.  The paper kit goes perfectly with many of the chipboard shapes from Gina's Designs, especially those in a Paris theme, as you will see in upcoming project I'm currently working on for later this month.

Here is my take on the sketch.  This month I decided to create a memorial layout for some of my favorite furry freinds who have passed on in recent years.  I am featuring one of our new ribbon titles, our chipboard bridge, and our Queen Anne's Lace.

Here is my take on the sketch.  This month I am using one of my daughters selfie photos in a mixed media layout.  I am featuring one of our texture sheets which made creating the rest of this layout so easy.  I painted the sheet with gesso followed by white pearlized paint by Folk Art.  I painted some of the other chipboard pieces with shimmerz paint and also used the same paint to cover a few random diamonds in the texture sheet to tie the layout together.

Here is my take on the sketch.  Once again I have featured my cat Willie.  I'm currently creating a whole memorial wall for him with all the layouts in shadowbox frames.  I love looking at it, it makes me smile.  I began this layout with some background stamping, and I also used our Steampunk Doily as a stencil, then turned it to the other side and layered the actual doily behind the photos.

Next up is Veronica with an amazing altered frame filled with vintage goodness!

Hello Everyone, Veronica here to share an altered frame project using several pieces from Gina's Designs.

I had this frame all covered in Gesso and ready for something over a year ago, but didn't have a clue where to go after that!  Finally, after looking through my chipboard shapes, I got inspired to bring it back out and do something with my Grandma's in mind.
Gina's Doodled Cages is a perfect addition, my Grandma loved birds.
One can never have too many of her Wooden Decorative Keys!

I adore Gina's Dress Forms!

Thanks again for stopping by! Have a Blessed Day!

Altered Canvas in a garden theme by Nancy and Sketch Challenge Layout by Marfa

Hi everyone, we have two posts on the blog today.  First up is Nancy with an altered inverted canvas.

Hi everybody, Nancy here!  Today I'm sharing one of my favorite themes again.  Nature!  Somehow for me, it's the theme that comes most easily, and gives me the most pleasure in creating.  I began with a simple application of gesso to the frame, then streaked it with some various colors of Folk Art acrylic paints.  When the paint was dry I added some Kroma Crackle.  This crackle product can take a couple of days to "cure" and finish crackling, so I just leave it and move on to other projects.  When it fully "cured", I rubbed on some Prima chalk inks in various colors to bring out the crackled finish.  I found a nature collage style of design paper in my stash that I'd picked up at Michael's, and I secured it to the back of the canvas with mod podge.  Now comes the fun part.  I began to gather my chippies and to ink, emboss and crackle them.  I looked through my "nature" stash and found nests, birds, eggs and mosses.  After that it only took an hour or so to decide on my final arrangement and to adhere the pieces to the canvas.

Gina's Designs Products Used:

Chipboard pieces have been colored with Prima Chalk Inks.  These are a great tool for coloring.  If you buy the big set you will have plenty of colors in the same family to use for shading.

Tree 3 ( a portion of the tree can be seen on the inside)
Topiary Trees (basic instructions are below the post on how I colored it)
Build-a-Layout Country Living (the wagon wheel) crackled with TH distress rock candy crackle paint
Ornate Corners (inner corner top right)
Fall Shape Set (the rake) colored with chalk ink then TH distrees embossing powder to look like rust

Coloring the Topiary:

I began with a light dry brushing of gesso followed by Prima Chalk Ink.  I "shaded" the pot by leaving the thinly coated white gesso uncolored in the center to give it a rounded look.  For the topiary, after I colored with shades of green chalk ink, I added some clear glass bead gel and left it to dry.  It will dry clear.  At that point you will have lots of texture from the beads that will be stuck to the chipboard.  I then rubbed on some Gilders Paste in Vertigris over the beads and along the edges.  Done!

Next up is Marfa,  who has followed our  March sketch challenge with a 12 x 12 layout titled "You'll Always Have My Heart".  Enter in our gallery for a chance at winning a $10 gift certificate for Gina's Designs online store.

Happy Saturday!!!  This is Crafting Marfa today.  I want to share a layout that I made recently.  I'm using a sketch by Gina's Designs.  The sketch is for this month's challenge,  So I invite you to check it out and participate!  These are vintage photos of my mom, my aunt and my uncle.  I matched the paper to my mom's shirt and my aunt's trousers.  I colored the chipboard with Gelly Roll pens and then with a glitter pen.  I followed the sketch and simply added a couple of tags, some die cuts and a few flowers.   This layout was very easy to put together.  The sketch is easy to follow.  I love the simplicity of this layout.  It is eye catching, but I didn't have to spend a whole day putting it together.  Scroll down for a list of supplies.

Next up is Shanna with an altered canvas appropriately titled Steampunk Love.

Hey everyone. Shanna here and excited to share this project with you. It is already February and the month of love. I was automatically drawn to the new Valentine's chippies Gina came out with in January and knew I had to create something with this Steampunk Heart.

So here you see all the bright colors I couldn't resist I am loving this color combo.

Here you can see some up close of the colors.

I gave the chipboard a coat of gesso. The title "Love" got a spray of Peony Prima Spray and then a little layer of Crackle Accents.

Love my new twinkling h2o's! They are amazing for light or dark colors!

Next up is Veronica with an altered frame in a fashion theme

Welcome February! Its hard to believe that the first month of 2014 is now behind us!
Nothing better than marching right into a new month with projects in mind!
And here is another project inspired by Gina's Designs
Today I want to share one of my favorites with you. Fashion Forward is a look into the future of design. I enjoyed using Gina's Dress Form from one of her Dress Form Shape Sets
Love the hooped skirt Dress Form Shape. Gives the era of the Victorian Age!
I pasted a old torn piece of pattern paper to add to the over all "Fashion Theme"
Look at the young Fashion Diva!  She's not afraid to go forward! I really enjoyed adding all the embellishments to complete the over all look. Laced ribbon and buttons....makes me want to go to my sewing machine!
Hope you enjoyed looking at my altered frame...this one is truly one of my favorites, and I am so excited to share it!
Blessings to you and yours
